The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has today released its annual report which covers the operational period of 2007.
Under Article 23 of the European Railway Safety Directive 2004/49/EC, the RAIB is required to produce an annual report accounting for the investigations carried out in the preceding year, the safety recommendations that were issued and actions taken in accordance with recommendations issued.
During the period covered by the report, the RAIB completed 47 investigations. This total includes one report into an investigation opened in 2005; 35 reports into investigations opened in 2006 and 11 reports into investigations opened in 2007. One investigation started in 2006 was discontinued and a report explaining this decision was published in 2007.
In total, these reports contained 292 recommendations. The annual report provides details on the implementation status of these 292 recommendations plus 95 recommendations which had a status of open or complete at the end of 2006, as reported by the safety authority in accordance with the requirements of the Railway (Accident Investigation and Reporting) Regulations 2005.
In summary:
- 111 recommendations are closed as completed by industry and validated as such by the safety authority.
- 154 recommendations are reported as completed by industry but yet to be validated by the safety authority.
- 116 recommendations are open; feedback is awaited or actions have not been completed.
- 6 recommendations are reported as closed with no action taken.
