Investigation into a collision between a passenger train and an engineer's trolley near Ealing Broadway station, West London, on 24 June 2008

The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into a collision between a passenger train and an engineers’ trolley that occurred near Ealing Broadway station in West London early on 24 June 2008.

The 00:15 hrs First Great Western service from Reading to London Paddington, a three car Class 165 diesel multiple unit, had just crossed from the up main to the up relief line at Acton West Junction when it struck an engineers’ trolley.  There were maintenance staff in the vicinity of the trolley and they were able to move to a position of safety before the collision occurred.  The trolley was wedged under the train after the collision, but the train did not derail.

No-one was injured in the collision, and the passengers were subsequently taken by road transport to their destinations.

The up relief line was opened at 06:41 hrs the same morning after the train and trolley had been removed.

On the basis of a preliminary examination there is no indication that the operation of signalling equipment, the condition of the train, or the way in which it was being driven, contributed to the collision.

The RAIB's investigation into the derailment is independent of any investigations by the safety authority or the Police.

The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation. This report will be available on the RAIB website.
