Investigation into a derailment at Marks Tey on 12 June 2008

The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into the derailment of a freight train at Marks Tey on 12 June 2008.

The derailment occurred at 14:05 hrs.  Train 4L41, operated by Freightliner and consisting of twelve loaded and four empty container wagons, was passing through Marks Tey station at 76 mph when one bogie derailed.

There were no casualties from the derailment, but there was minor damage to train and to some 4 km of track.  The line was fully re-opened the following day.

On the basis of a preliminary examination there is no indication that the condition or operation of the train or the signalling system caused the derailment.

The RAIB's investigation into the derailment is independent of any investigations by the safety authority and the British Transport Police.

The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation.  This report will be available on the RAIB website.
