Investigation into the derailment of a freight train near Moor Street station Birmingham on 25 March 2008
At 06:38 hrs four empty scrap carrying wagons in train 6M15, the 01:46 hrs Aldwarke to Handsworth, derailed on the approach to Moor Street station. At this location the railway is carried on a viaduct. The four derailed vehicles were overturned or partly overturned, there was some damage to the parapet of the viaduct and a quantity of brickwork fell to the ground below. No-one was injured during the accident. The wagons were lifted by use of a breakdown crane, and the line reopened after repairs at 02:14 hrs on 27 March.
Initial investigations show no evidence that the state of the signalling system or the driving of the train contributed to the accident.
