Investigation into a derailment near Scunthorpe, on 25 January 2008
The derailment occurred at 10:53 hrs, when the leading bogie of the tenth wagon of train 6M49, consisting of a Class 66 locomotive and 18 HHA wagons loaded with coal, derailed near Foreign Ore Branch junction, three miles east of Scunthorpe station. The train ran derailed for over a kilometre, and caused considerable damage to the track. There were no casualties.
The RAIB’s preliminary examination indicates no issues with the condition of the locomotive or the signalling system that could have contributed to the derailment, and no evidence of obstructions on the line.
The RAIB's investigation into the derailment is proceeding independently of any parallel investigations by the safety authority, but the RAIB will share technical evidence as appropriate, subject to legal exclusions such as the identity and statements of witnesses.
The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation. This report will be available on the RAIB website.
