Investigation into a collision between two road rail vehicles at Glen Garry, on 5 December 2007

The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into a collision between two road rail vehicles at Glen Garry, near Blair Atholl, on 5 December 2007.

The collision occurred during a T3 possession of the Highland main line between Blair Atholl and Dalwhinnie. The incident involved a road/rail excavator hauling a loaded trailer. The road/rail vehicle (RRV) was towing the trailer down a 1:70 gradient in heavy rain and was unable to stop when it approached a worksite where another RRV was operating on the adjacent track. Staff at the worksite narrowly avoided injury by jumping clear and a minor collision between the two RRVs ensued. A serious collision was narrowly avoided by prompt warning from a member of site staff and a prompt response by the operator of the static RRV who was able to raise its boom above the approaching RRV.

The RAIB's investigation into the collision is proceeding independently of any parallel investigations by the safety authority, but the RAIB will share technical evidence as appropriate, subject to legal exclusions such as the identity and statements of witnesses.

The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation.  This report will be available on the RAIB website.
