Investigation into an accident at Leatherhead on 29 August 2007

The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into an accident at Leatherhead on 29 August 2007.

At 09:57 hrs the 09:09 hrs train from London Waterloo to Guildford, consisting of two four car electric multiple units struck a member of railway staff immediately to the south of Leatherhead station. All lines were blocked to traffic and an emergency traction current isolation was taken for both lines.  The member of railway staff was seriously injured, and removed to hospital by air ambulance.  The railway remained closed until 13:31 hrs whilst initial examination of the site took place.

The RAIB’s initial examination indicate that the driving and condition of the train did not contribute to the accident.

The RAIB's investigation into the accident is proceeding independently of any parallel investigations by the safety authority, but the RAIB will share technical evidence as appropriate, subject to legal exclusions such as the identity and statements of witnesses.

The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation.  This report will be available on the RAIB website.
