Investigation into a derailment at Ely on 22 June 2007

The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into a derailment near Ely, Cambridgeshire on 22 June 2007.

At 02:05 hrs on 22 June 2007 the 21:19 hrs Mountsorrel – Chelmsford freight train, formed of a locomotive and 37 wagons, derailed in the vicinity of a bridge over the River Ouse between Ely Dock Junction and Soham.  Eleven wagons in the centre of the train were derailed.  Reports from the site indicate considerable damage to the track and bridge, and it is expected that the line between Ely and Bury St Edmunds will be closed for some time.

There were no casualties.

The RAIB's investigation into the incident is proceeding independently of any parallel investigations by the safety authority, but the RAIB will share technical evidence as appropriate, subject to legal exclusions such as the identity and statements of witnesses.

The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation.  This report will be available on the RAIB website.
