Investigation into an incident on Croydon Tram on 15 June 2007
At 15:50 hrs on 15 June 2007, as a tram was preparing to leave the stop at Wellesley Road Croydon, a young man approached the tram as its doors were closing and placed his hand in the close vicinity of the door. The tram door closed, and the tram started to move. The young man walked and then ran alongside the tram for about 15 metres before pulling his arm clear, and it appears that he may have had his hand trapped in the closing door for some seconds. The young man pulled clear of the tram, and left the stop. A passenger who saw the incident happening operated the tram alarm so that the tram stopped before it had reached the end of the stop platform.
The RAIB is investigating the operation and maintenance of passenger doors on the Croydon Tram system in order to ascertain whether there is a risk of passengers being trapped by a door and dragged along by a tram.
The RAIB's investigation into the incident is proceeding independently of any parallel investigations by the safety authority, but the RAIB will share technical evidence as appropriate, subject to legal exclusions such as the identity and statements of witnesses.
The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation. This report will be available on the RAIB website.
